A hotel always had a challenge: the solo travel tended to want a single king size bed and would typically travel midweek.
On the other hand, families or groups of friends tended to want two queen size beds.
So that meant at any one time a typical room would go unused for some part of the week.
Innovative hotels like Holiday Inn are now experimenting with pull out sofa beds which means they can now cater for both customers at the same time.
It's tempting to think this would not go down well (who wants to sleep on a sofa after all?) but actually it appears if anything to be a growing trend.
The innovation in hotels is not just tech related it seems.
“It used to be that no one wanted to sleep on the pull-out sofa. Now, there are several companies [that] have improved the experience by incorporating thicker mattresses, easier setup and the removal of the dreaded bar. The goal now is to not just make the sleeper sofa where the kids sleep, but a useful element to have in rooms for adults as well.” — Lisa Haude, president of Paradigm Design Group
